Addiction Services

The Addiction Treatment Program at Bergen Regional Medical Center is designed to provide a full range of services across the entire continuum of care for patients ages 18 or over with a primary diagnosis of chemical dependency. A specialized inpatient hospital program provides a safe and supportive intensive treatment program for those patients who are concluded to be a danger to themselves or others due to either a substance abuse and/or psychiatric problem. Hospital based and medically monitored detoxification services provide a safe and controlled withdrawal from alcohol, opiates and benzodiazepines. ASAM criteria will determine patient placement for those who require residential, partial hospital or intensive outpatient programming. Abstinence, aggressive intervention, family participation and sustained support are the key elements of addiction services.

Inpatient Medical Detoxification

This 50-bed inpatient unit medical detoxification program provides an initial physical examination and health assessment by addiction board certified physicians, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and certified nursing attendants under the joint auspices of the Bergen Regional Medical Center Department of Medicine and Behavioral Health Services. The multidisciplinary team monitors the safe and controlled withdrawal from alcohol, opiates and benzodiazepines. Upon completion of detoxification, the patient will be referred to the most appropriate level of care to continue addiction treatment.

Bergen Regional Medical Center Expands its Medical Detox Program
To accommodate patients in need of Detox who have ambulating issues or other medical comorbidities, Bergen Regional has expanded its detox program to accommodate higher acuity patients. For admissions information/criteria, please contact the BRMC Access Center at 1.800.730.2762. Download a flyer.

Residential Programs

Patients who require a 24/7 structured and safe environment to address their addiction will be treated in this level of care.

Outpatient Program

The primary goal of the Outpatient Program is to successfully treat patients in the least restrictive environment. All participants are closely monitored and receive appropriate referral services dependent on progress and reaction to treatment.

Suboxone Support Group

The BRMC Suboxone Support Group provides medical monitoring and group therapy to opioid dependent patients who may benefit from this treatment. Participants attend a minimum of three groups per month, receive prescriptions from a Board Certified Addiction Psychiatry or Medicine Specialist and are monitored to insure clean toxicology screens. Medicare and Medicaid are welcome.

Vivitrol Support Group

The BRMC Vivitrol Support Group provides medical monitoring and group therapy for opioid and alcohol dependent patients who chose this modality. Participants attend a minimum one group per month. They receive prescriptions from a Board Certified Addiction Psychiatry or Medicine Specialist and may be monitored to insure clean toxicology screens. Medicare and Medicaid are welcome.

Senior Citizen Medication, Intervention and Solutions Service

If you are a senior citizen (65+), or know of a senior, experiencing problems with “too much medication” (e.g. pain killers, sedatives, sleeping pills), we may be able to help. Older people often develop problems with memory, daily function and mood due to commonly prescribed medications. BRMC can provide an expert individualized outpatient evaluation of medications followed by recommendations for treatment.

MICA Partial Hospital

The MICA Partial Hospital serves patients dealing with co-occurring mental illness and chemical addiction who require daily medical and nursing attention due to the intensity of their addiction and the severity of their psychiatric problem. A five hour a day structured group treatment program following the 12 step model provides patients with critical services that will allow them to learn the skills required to control their symptoms, lead productive lives and prevent relapse.

Intensive Outpatient Program

The BRMC Intensive Outpatient Program offers a day or evening three hour schedule of group programming based on the 12 step model of care. The day program meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. The evening program meets Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.. The program includes psychodrama, family participation, counseling and spiritual guidance. The treatment team, consisting of psychiatrists and certified drug counselors will determine the frequency and length of attendance based on close monitoring of the patient's progress in treatment. An introduction to Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous is an important part of the treatment process. Daily meetings are held at Bergen Regional Medical Center. Patients are encouraged to attend and to participate on a continuing basis.
